India has launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission recently as an initiative for building an ecosystem with supposedly far-reaching implications on various aspects of public life. Health ID as one component of this mission targets to procure and store health-related records in digital format comprising digital lab reports, prescriptions, and diagnosis for seamless availability across platforms on need basis. The readily available records in digitized form have immense benefits, and while the technique is well adopted by many developed nations or leading hospitals in any country, the widespread availability of the technique in developing nations like India was highly desirable.
The loss of records is perennial problem faced by the clinicians and mere carelessness on the part of patients is not the sole reason behind it. The records are subjected to damage due to natural or human-made calamities, theft, inadvertent damage, and migration among few other causes. While newer records or investigations can be produced anytime, the old records on several occasions are critical and play an integral role for clinical management or research purpose. Orhopedic discipline deals with injuries and musculoskeletal disorders, the treatment of which mostly spans over days, months, or even years altogether in the follow-up on case-by-case basis. Many a times, disease evolution, fracture healing, or clinical improvement is judged while making astute comparison with previous records. Records such as documents, radiographs, or other relevant investigations make for a voluminous asset and demand proper care and maintenance by patients or relatives. Despite that many of these items are spoiled or get damaged in transportation. Their transportation across cities whether for referral or multiple opinion is challenging job making precious records susceptible to damages.
Researches going back to their starting phase years ago to the time of origin of symptoms or in few cases even before birth require good data handling and preservation and data may be found very fortunately in selected cases or worse not at all. Prior consultation or investigation slips available at click of mouse may give overview of entire journey of the patient for better insight into disease processes. Its impact on complicated and multidisciplinary care is promising.
The consent given by patient for some form of study like case report or original work may also be included so that repeat reporting of the same or similar studies may be prevented. Important correlation may be noted with better data presentation from retrospective assessment and newer associations may bring newer research questions, thus promoting further advances in clinical research. Newer data can also help study clinical behavior of many disease processes yet poorly understood. Apart from collecting newer long-term complications of surgical procedures, due to long-term digital data, availability may throw lights on newer association or outcome that may bring actual change in the practice. Newer case reports thus generated may benefit medical fraternity at large. Multicenter studies shall be easier and shall be promoting bonhomie and camaraderie among peers. Credibility based on genuine data thus shall prosper medical literature beyond imagination. The concern for digital safety and online security of personal data shall always be the critical element in the longevity of the program which the government should place in high regard. Better knowledge of the services in grass root level is important for sustainability and success of this initiative which is contemporary and congratulatory.
